We’re a small team of Africans who have gone to great lengths to find the most sustainable safaris available on the continent.
Our aim at SSA is to be the first choice for those travellers who want to experience the wilderness of Africa but are concerned about the impact their safari has on both the people and the wildlife of this most fragile and fundamental of continents. Our travellers want their money to go directly to the people of the country they visit, not end up going to middlemen in the global north.
The travel industry, and particularly the safari industry, has been very slow to transform from a mainly White and foreign-owned industry, operating often on land that is not owned by local people. At SSA, we want to shine a light on those safaris that are owned and managed by Africans in a way that directly benefits Africa and Africans.
As such, we will only list those safaris and operators that:
Are operated, owned and managed by people local and indigenous to the countries in which they operate.
Are going the extra mile to conserve the local environment in which they operate, both in terms of people and planet, in a locally relevant way.
Take place in national parks or on community-owned land or if not possible on land where the local community directly benefits in terms of employment and training in the safari operations.
Sustainable Safaris Africa is a brand of English Safari CC, a not-for-profit company located in Cape Town, South Africa. We have been in the sustainable travel business in Africa since 2006.
